WHAT IS NEW WORKS WEEKEND?

New Works Weekend [a FTW patchwork project] is a creative opportunity for playwrights to produce new works through a cohort of artists assembled by For the Whim Productions.

TRANSPARENCY

This is a non-equity, unpaid, all-volunteer production. For the Whim is a nonprofit theatre organization committed to creating opportunities for local artists, playwrights, thespians, and the like to cultivate and share their work with a larger audience in a culturally diverse and respectable manner representative of all walks of life.

PLAY SELECTIONS

We are seeking several short, one act plays (20 minutes or less). Plays are collected through a standardized submission form and reviewed by the NWW Committee. Thoughtful consideration is given to ensure a variety of plays are chosen based on set criteria. While we cannot guarantee that every submission will be selected, the Committee is happy to provide feedback to the playwrights upon request. Playwrights are eligible and encouraged to apply again in subsequent years.

DIRECTOR SELECTIONS

Directors will be selected by the NWW Committee. We encourage individuals with any level of experience to apply. FTW offers mentorship from its team of seasoned directors and production staff.

If you are interested in directing, please complete the NWW Director Application.

CASTING

  • Directors are encouraged to cast their shows on their own as soon as possible.
  • FTW will also host open auditions on Sunday, January 12 to fill any remaining roles.

  • FTW practices inclusive casting and will indicate if a role has specific racial, ethnic, gender, age, ability, or any other requirements. We value and encourage diverse and non-traditional casting selections.

REHEARSALS

Directors are responsible for arranging their own rehearsals. FTW will provide Directors with a recommended list of venues that offer the use of their space free-of-charge.

TECH & PERFORMANCES

  • This is a black-box style production.

  • Each show will be scheduled to perform once over the two-day production. A final lineup will be determined based on Director/Cast availability, technical needs, and overall event flow.
