Character Descriptions

Viola: Female, stage age 20-35
Bold, courageous, wise, and resilient; a risk-taker; open–hearted and generous, possessing the kind of charisma that automatically draws everyone to her. Effervescent; brimming with life, and hungry for experience. Flirtatious, wears her sexuality on her sleeve, which becomes complicated when circumstances force her to disguise herself as a man. A role for an actress with strong comedic and dramatic abilities. Confident singing a plus.

Sebastian, as cast: Male, stage age 20-35
Viola’s twin brother, youthful and exuberant. He is mistaken for Cesario, Viola’s male alter-ego. Soulful and sensitive. Shares his sister’s generosity of spirit, and naturally possesses an understated, unassuming charm that draws others to him, evoking feelings of affection and even love from complete strangers. Must look like the actress playing Viola; attractive, smart, funny – deeply felt and romantic.

Orsino: Male, stage age 30-45
The Duke of Illyria, regal and good-natured, with a poetic soul. Intense, brooding, sexy; helplessly in love with Olivia, and determined to do anything to win her affection. Orsino is lovesick for the beautiful Lady Olivia, but becomes more and more fond of his handsome new page boy, Cesario, who is actually a woman—Viola. A supreme egotist, Orsino mopes around complaining how heartsick he is over Olivia, when it is clear that he is chiefly in love with the idea of being in love and enjoys making a spectacle of himself. His attraction to the ostensibly male Cesario injects sexual ambiguity into his character.

Malvolio, as cast: Male, stage age 30-70
Olivia’s Chief of Staff, intense, reserved, puritanical, and a little old fashioned. Malvolio takes himself very seriously (too seriously) and is so self-involved that he’s frequently unaware of what’s going on around him. Sticks out like a sore thumb in a community focused on pleasure and parties—he would wear a three piece suit on the beach. His strict devotion to his work and maintaining order causes him to be isolated and misunderstood. It’s completely against his nature to let loose and just have fun.

Sir Toby Belch: Male, stage age 40-70
Full of life and good humor. Very funny, but not without depth and wit. He’s someone who should have outgrown his hard-partying lifestyle long ago, but he won’t let a little thing like age stop him. Over indulgent in all aspects of his life, he can’t resist a good brawl or a good woman. Larger than life in every way. A role for an actor with enormous expanse of humor and heart.

Sir Andrew Aguecheek: Male, stage age 30-50
A friend of Sir Toby’s. A party animal. Eccentric, funny, frivolous, and completely unaware of his lack of appeal to women and men alike. Not the brightest crayon in the box, he doesn’t realize that his “friends” are really only after his booze and money. He thinks that he is witty, brave, young, and good at languages and dancing, but he is actually an idiot. A role for an actor with full emotional range and strong comedic skills.

Feste, as cast: Any, stage age 30-70
Olivia’s jester; smart and incisive; clever and cutting; Feste is the only fool that they suffer. Must be able to sing and ideally (but not necessarily) be able to play multiple instruments. Looking for an actor who can captivate the audience and draw them in by creating a palpable magical atmosphere. Must have a tremendous facility with text and an innate sense of how to navigate a Shakespeare comedy.

Maria: Female, stage age 25-55
Olivia’s confidante and maid. Clever, strong-minded, and loyal, a schemer who runs Olivia’s household below stairs; not to be messed with; has lived life; no shrinking violet; confident. She is a canny, big-hearted, funny and fiercely loyal to Olivia and the integrity of her house; she’s also, perhaps to her own detriment, in love with an alcoholic Sir Toby.

Antonio, as cast: Any (but preferably M), stage age 20-45
Antonio is piratical but sophisticated. Openly attracted to Sebastian.

Sea Captain/Fabian: Any, stage age 30 and up
